The sanctity of the masjid in Islam is serious. The masjid was built for worship, remembrance of Allah, prayer, knowledge, and tranquility — not fighting, retaliation, intimidation, or public conflict.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Hudud punishments are not carried out in the mosques, nor is retaliation carried out in them.”
لَا تُقَامُ الْحُدُودُ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ، وَلَا يُسْتَقَادُ فِيهَا
Reported in Musnad Ahmad and Sunan Abi Dawud.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“If one of you passes through our mosque carrying arrows, then let him hold their tips so he does not injure a Muslim.”
Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
If accidental harm is prohibited in the masjid, then intentional aggression, intimidation, mob behavior, and fighting are even more prohibited.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Insulting a Muslim is sinful, and fighting him is disbelief.”
سِبَابُ الْمُسْلِمِ فُسُوقٌ وَقِتَالُهُ كُفْرٌ
And he ﷺ said:
“A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.”
The scholars used these narrations to establish that:
– fighting in the masjid,
– retaliatory violence,
– threatening Muslims,
– public confrontations,
– causing fear and chaos,
all violate the sanctity (حرمة) of the House of Allah.
The masjid is a place of sakīnah, not retaliation.
