Q & A Should the Student of Knowledge Memorize First Buluguh Al Maraam or Umdatul Ahkam, by Shaykh Salih Al Fawzan.

Question: does the student of knowledge starts first with memorizing Buluguh Al Maraam ( بلوغ المرام, Attainment of the Objective According to Evidences of the Ordinances by al-Hafidh ibn Hajar al-Asqalani) or Umdatul Ahkam ( عمدة الأحكام, hadith pertaining to juristic rulings, by Imam Abd Al-Ghani Al-Maqdisi) ?

Answer: the student of knowledge it’s a must that the first thing he choose is a teacher. Either he chooses a teacher from the regular school ( place of studying), from the various of teachers. The teacher reads the studied course (material) to him, and the student memorize and understand from the teacher the curriculum which within it is (Islamic ) knowledge.

If it doesn’t exist in the regular studies course (from school studies) then he sits with anyone of the Mashaykh (scholars) or any of the Mashaykh that’s easy for him to learn from. So the Shaykh he is the one who teaches him. The Shaykh comments on the book and he explains and clarifies the book to him (in the circles of knowledge).

Concerning merely for the sake of the memorization, if you want to memorize the world and all that’s in it, it will not benefit you. The memorization (of books, text etc) is not sufficient ( by it self for learning), it’s a must to have the comprehension (of Islamic subjects being taught). If he bring together to memorize and understand that is related to the various levels of learning.
