I was having a detailed conversation with an old friend of mine about learning the Arabic language. So he mentions one of his teachers of the Deen. I told him this person knows Arabic very well and asked him how much he is benefiting from him. He responded that this mentor did not teach Arabic any more because people start and never finish. Which is very true in many cases.
But my question is why, and over the years traveling to learn Arabic and Deen, and my own personal experience, and a general course learning the methods of teaching a second language. I notice here in America the Islamic centers and masjids, and Markaz that teach Arabic and have these type of results where the student starts then quits shortly, it’s because of a few things.
First, because I know a language doesn’t mean I am able to teach it. This is why in the US ESL teachers must have a lot of requirements and qualifications to teach English as a Second language it is only not about knowing the language but also approaches in teaching. This is one of the reasons why classes start with Arabic and end shortly due to some teachers does not know the approach of teaching a person a second language.
Second, Americans are programmed to only know the English language solely is by design. This is part of the hidden patriotism of the US education and culture structure. How I know I’ve lived outside the US and some Western countries people can speak more than one language. Deep part of American culture is white supremacy and that is not restricted to skin color but also language. Because we are Americans and Muslims it does not mean we are free from this hidden patriotism, it might be we have not realized we have this. With the addition, nothing forces us to learn another language as Americans living in the US
Third, this is the major reason why many of us struggle to learn or do not see the importance of learning Arabic is because the Quran is not in our hearts. Allah the most high said in His Noble book :
The bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you of your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
So many of us the Quran is not in our hearts because faith has not yet entered our hearts, and we are not attached to it.
This is the reason why we are not attached to the language the Quran was revealed in, Allah the Most High said:
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
” Indeed we sent it down the Arabic Quran perhaps for you to understand “.
Know that our souls’ are weak and coming out the month of Ramadan, which we trained the souls in being upright, and it prepares us for the remaining year.
This training is a sign that we must push our souls to do good, meaning forcing our self to do good and be upright.
“And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). Every time they will be provided with a fruit therefrom, they will say: “This is what we were provided with before,” and they will be given things in resemblance (i.e. in the same form but different in taste) and they shall have therein Azwajun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives) and they will abide therein forever.”
(سورة البقرة, Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #25)
This is from pushing the soul to do righteous deeds.
We have a reminder in the Quran that we are encouraged not to only be religious people, merely worshipers but to be learned men of the Religion.
Allah states in His Noble Book:
“It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allah has given the Book and Al-Hukma (the knowledge and understanding of the laws of religion, etc.) and Prophet-hood to say to the people: “Be my worshipers rather than Allah’s.” On the contrary (he would say): “Be you Rabbaniyun (learned men of religion who practice what they know and also preach others), because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it.”
We can not reach this without the Arabic language.
So if you want to take that step to learn the Arabic language and do not know how I can help you get on track inshallah. Just ask so I can show you some the easy ways you can take steps to learn the language of the Holy Quran.
