Question: a question, the brother’s name letter ع -س -ع Ayan -Seen Ayan (when the name is not known how to pronounce they say the letters of the name) from Kuwait he asked a question: ” I hear some of the people pronouncing the Shahadah (declaring of faith)

أشهد أنّ لا إله إلا الله

Ashadu anna La ilah ilaa Allah–

 making a shaddah doubling the letter in   أنّ anna. Then I hear some of the people saying

أشهد أنْ لا إله إلا الله

Ashadu an La ilah ilaa Allah 

adding a sukoon-  ْ  – ( a symbol which is the absence of a vowel) on أنْ an. Which is correct from the two?”. Please benefit us with what Allah bestow upon you O Eminence Shaykh.

Answer: that which is correct is to make it with sukoon-  ْ  – ( a symbol which is the absence of a vowel) , and the explication: أشهد أنه لا إله إلا الله ashadu anhu (that He) la ilha ila Allah- but in the Arabic language this example sukoon of the letter Nun ْالنون ) ن)  and idgham (merging) with the letter  ل اللام (laam) to make clear the explication (related to the rules of reading in Arabic). That is to make the shaddah  ّ  doubling the letter ن Nun and following it is the letter الهاء – ه – ha after, there is no problem with this.

It is said:

أشهد أنه لا إله إلا الله

ashadu annahu la ilaha ila Allah.

But what is used which is represented in the text in the Hadiths about the Prophet ﷺ he said it with the Nun ن sound from the Nun Saakinah ( ْ ن  ) is completely eliminated and the first letter laam is  idgham ( is merged as pronounced ash-ha-du alla ilaha ila Allah) this is more preferred and Allah is the Source of strength.

في قول: (أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله) هل الصحيح (أن) بالتشديد أو (أن) بالسكون؟ س: الأخ: ع. س. ع- من الكويت يقول في سؤاله: أسمع بعض الناس يقول في التشهد: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله – بالتشديد في أنّ – وبعضهم يقول: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله – بالتسكين في أن – فأيهما الصحيح؟ أفيدونا أفادكم الله يا سماحة الشيخ.

ج: الصحيح: التسكين، والمعنى: أشهد أنه لا إله إلا الله، ولكن لغة العرب في مثل هذا تسكن النون وتدغمها في اللام لظهور المعنى، وإن شدد النون وأتى بالهاء فلا حرج في ذلك، وذلك بأن يقول: أشهد أنه لا إله إلا الله، ولكن استعمال اللفظ الوارد في الأحاديث عن النبي ﷺ وهو تخفيف النون وإدغامها في اللام أولى وأفضل. والله ولي التوفيق[1]. مجموع فتاوى ومقالات الشيخ ابن باز (423/8).
