The Division of Water Related to Purification for Worship
Q&A from Shaykh Abdul Azeez bin Baz rahimahullah.
Q: What is the correct statement related to the division of water, is it two divisions: Taahir (1.), and Najis (3.), or is it, three divisions: Tahor (2.) and Taahir, and Najis?
A: The correct answer is that water in its totally, is divided into two divisions: Tahor and Najis: Allah the Most High said:
And We send down from the sky the water that is Tahor (pure{2.})
Surah al Furqaan 48.
And He the Most High said:
“(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a security from Him, and He caused water (rain) to descend on you from the sky, to clean you thereby and to remove from you the Rijz (whispering, evil-suggestions) of Shaitan (Satan)..”
Surah al Anfaal:11
The Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said:
That water is Tahor (pure) and nothing makes it Najis (filthy).
Collected by Imam Ahmed, and Abu Dawud, and Thrimidi, and An-Nisaae with an authentic chain. From Saeed al Khudree may Allah be pleased with him.
What he sallahu wa alyhi wa salam intended: except that what alters its taste, and scent, and color with a thing that is from Nijasaat (plural of Najis {filthy}) for it makes it filthy by the consensus of the scholar (of fiqh).
Concerning what falls in the water for drinking purpose (etc. fluorine), or leaves of a tree, or like those two things, for indeed it does not make it Najis (filthy). For it does not lose its purity, it continues to remain to be called water (for the purpose of acts of worship).
Concerning, the name water it changes with what mixes within it for it becomes another name (something else) like milk, and coffee, and tea and toward these things. It leaves from the name of water, and it is not called water, but within itself it is still Taahir (pure) with what is mix in it, and it does not make it Najis (filthy) (that which is pure like coffee, tea, milk all these substances are pure, but not used for acts of worship like ablution).
Concerning restricted water like rose water, grape water (juice), and water of pomegranate, it is called Taahir, and it is not called Tahor, and is not used to cleanse (become pure) from Hadath (major & minor impurities 4.), and Najisaat because it is water that is restricted (not used to cleanse for acts of worship like ablution), and it is not water in its totality. It is not used as evidence in the Islamic Law for purifying a thing with water ( cleansing the body for washing for acts of worship). The Islamic Law only described water in its totality for cleansing, just as rain (water), water from the sea/ocean, and rivers, and water springs. Allah is the Source of strength.. Majmuaa (10/14)

Footnotes & Explanation
Taahir : Is something that is pure but is not used to purify cleanse something else, like water from apple (juice) it is pure within itself but not used to purify (cleanse) other than it like for acts of worship like for wudu for salah, tawaaf. Which alters the color, or taste, or scent of the water.
Tahor: Is water that is pure and it is used to purify cleanse with it, such as cleans the body and place for the acts of worship like wudu and salah and tawaaf. Like water, that is from a well, water spring, ocean/sea, rivers, rain water, snow.
Najis: Filth/Impurity, not used to cleanse, which if it alters the color, taste, and scent of water is not be used to cleanse for the acts of worship like for wudu/ghusl for salah, tawaaf.
What is Najis according to Fiqh: human urine and feces, pre-ejaculate fluid, white discharge that comes out after urine, some scholars say sperm, some scholars view sperm is not najis because life comes from it but when it comes out ghusl is a must for the individual in the state of Junub, animal dung, menstruation blood, alcoholic (intoxicated drinks), swine, dead animals*, the dog’s saliva & mouth some scholars hold that the whole dog is najis statement that is Jamaheer of Ulimaa ( close in numbers to the Consensus of the Scholars) but differed Imam Malik, and Imam Dawud, and Imam Az-Zharee, taken from Subul as-Salam the Chapter of Purification.
Hadath and it is al-Hadath al-Asgar Minor Impurity and al-Akbar Major Impurity. It was asked to Shaykh Salih al Fawzan:
Text from Question what is understood from alhadath al akbar Major Impurity(ies) and hadath asgar Minor Impurity(ies)?
Text of the answer of al-Hadath al-Akbar major impurity it is what is obligatory to make ghusul (wash) like from menstruation blood (when she finish her mense), and Junab (sexual impurities from the sexual relationship which is need ghusul), and postnatal bleeding (after childbirth) these things are al-hadath al-akbar.
Concerning al-Hadath al-Asgar minor impurity for it is what is obligatory to make wudu (ablution), like from urinating and defecating (urine and feces) and the remaining things the invalidates one’s wudu (like sleeping, passing gas, eating camel meat, pre-ejaculate fluid) so what is obligatory is wudu only for al-hadath al-asgar. What is obligatory for ghusul is for al-hadath al-asgar. Between them, two are differences angle, what is consequent upon al-hadath al-akbar and al-hadath al-asgar is from the rulings which it positions is found in the books of jurisprudence (al-fiqh).
