Question & Answer By Shaykh Saleh Luhaidan Giving Charity on Behalf of the Decease is the reward for the Decease, or the Reward is for the Decease and Benefactor?
Q. What is the ruling of giving charity on behalf of the decease. Is the charity specified on behalf of the decease only, or does he shares in the (reward of) charity as a benefactor (the one who gives charity).
A. The benefactor shall share (the benefit) on giving charity on behalf of the deceased. So that the people if they extend freely to spend in charity on behalf of the deceased, it benefits the decease. For that the Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam, when passed away Umm Sad son of Ibaadah, Sad was with the Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam in a Gazwa (battle{s} of the Prophet) so when they returned, Sad came to the Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam and said: that Umm Sad she died or was destroyed and that if she was able to speak she would of spoken of giving sadaqah (charity) . So the question is will she benefit from this charity that he gives charity on her behalf. So he sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said: ” Yes,”.
For the charity from the living is on behalf of the deceased a reward (for this action) and the extending for spending for the sake of charity just as it’s the same concept. That he shares a reward or he doesn’t speculate such (if he gets a reward or not), for that Allah the Majestic and the Most High He doesn’t allow to perish the reward from an action with ihsaan (perfection-seeking rewards to please Allah).
