Question & Answer From Shaykh Dr. Salih al Fawzan, What is the Meaning: “Love and Hate for the Sake of Allah”?

Q:  It’s being asked what is the meaning ‘ love for the sake of Allah and hate for the sake of Allah’?

A:  The meaning of it: that you love a person, and that you don’t love a person, that you don’t love him except for the sake of Allah. That you don’t love him for the purpose that he gives you wealth, or for the purpose that he benefits you from materials gains of the worldly life. Only you love him because he is a righteous man (Fears Allah, and is upright).

Hatred for the sake of Allah, is that you don’t hate him  because he doesn’t give a thing (that you want). But that you hate him because he is an enemy to Allah and that he is an opposition to the obedience of Allah. Glorified is Allah and the Most High, that you hate him for the purpose of that, and that you don’t hate him for the purpose that he doesn’t give you a thing (that you want), or for the purpose that he and what is between you, and between him is feuds ( typical non-Islamic hatred, fallout, rancor)  or what is similar to that.
