Q: The Hadeeth of the Messenger of Allah sallahu wa alyhi wa salam:  ” a person is upon the Deen (way) of his  close companion (bosom buddy, best friend, companion, associate).” Explain to us this hadeeth.

A: The Hadeeth is clear, that the close companion and the company (he keeps) affects the one who he is keeping company with, and affects  his companion (those who he takes as friends and keeps company with). So it is upon the Muslim that he choose a close companion that is righteous, which he benefits from his friendship (by his good conduct and manners),  and he protects his deen with this friendship (and good company of a righteous Muslim), and he stays away from bad (and evil) company.

The Messenger of Allah sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said:

“The similitude of righteous company and bad company is a similitude of a person who sells musk fragrance and an iron smith.

The company of the righteous is like a the person who holds and sells  fragrance musk  either he gives you “

Means you receive and benefit from this  fragrance musk;

“either you buy from him or either that you find this good fragrance as long you are with him (meaning the good smell will rub off on you).

The company of the iron smith either it will scorch your clothing or either you will find from him unpleasant smell (it will rub off on your this smell, or smell like him).”

A poet once said:

“If you befriend a people choose the best of them******* and  don’t befriend from evil (and bad company) for you will be evil (in manners, or you will become ruined).”
