All the praises is for Allah the Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon His Chosen Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions all of them.

Brothers and sisters…we have all heard the term ‘Wali’. In general, many who use the term are absolutely ignorant of what it actually means or even slightly implies!
I’m talking from direct experience here…I’ve attended my fair share of talks where people describe individuals and what miracles they performed…a direct claim/link is made that they did what they did because they were Walis!
What’s worse is if you ask the speaker…’Akhee, what is a Wali?’ He will simply s…tare at you and then come up with something `fantastic`…or give you a huge talk about how the ‘scholars’ have said he is a wali.
Subhanallah…for starters, let’s rid ourselves of the classic example of who a Wali is usually made out to be! From the talks I have attended, a Wali is supposed to be a poor individual who lives a life of need, not having anything to his name, walks around (possibly barefooted)….etc.
THIS IS ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!
A Wali is defined by Allah, in His words:
“Those who are close to Allah (i.e. Awliya ~ Wali) shall certainly have no fear, nor shall they grieve. They are those who believe and are mindful of Allah (have Taqwa ~ true humility and piety to Allah alone). For them there is good news in this life and in the Hereafter: the Word of Allah shall never change. That is the supreme triumph.” (10:62-64)
The second issue, how do we know who is one? This is something exclusive to Allah. We cannot assert that one is or is not, as this is tied with the condition of your heart and your practice.
More important than this…can anyone of us become a Wali…the answer here is, ‘Inshallah’, work and do your best, as this is what is required of you in Islam (to do your best), and you will achieve what you thought not possible at first.
May Allah bless us all! Ameen
