Question:
You mentioned about not taking mortgages and living out of ones means. We have followed this philosophy however someone made a good point to us recently, what happens in our old age, if we live to that and we cannot afford to work and pay for rent. How will we live if we haven’t bought a house now in our younger days?
Answer:
Looking at this question, there is no doubt in my mind that it is a concern in the back of the minds of many. So how do we deal wit…h this issue?
a. A belief approach: You have to have firm faith that it is Allah who takes care of us…It is He Who blesses us with the blessings we enjoy…if Allah so wills, one of us can become rich in the easiest of ways and others may experience poverty in the quickest of ways. To believe that one’s provisions are preordained and will come to him/her in spite of all that happens in the course of ‘life’ is a matter of faith. No one can prevent you what has been ordained for you…nor can anyone grant you what has not been ordained for you. Tied intricately in this point is that we do our part…and leave the rest to Allah.
b. An upbringing issue: It is with this issue, that the narration: ‘As you treat others, you shall be treated’ comes to light.
A Muslim is required to take care and look after his parents. When the children see that their father and mother have done this for their parents, they too will do the same for their parents…its a cycle, but when broken produces ‘heart-wrenching’ stories.
c. A societal issue: As a society as a community…we band together to take care of our own…to look after our elderly…although it is not adequately taken care of today…we are in a phase that we can call a ‘working progress.’
After this…let me add, that the Prophet, may Allah praise him, said: “No one excessively consumes interest (mortgaged loans based on interest, etc.) except that their end-affair will be poverty.”
Its quite sad, but in my capacity as a counsellor, I’ve come across so many stories…where the parents have a home, but have lost all their kids…what use is a home, when it is empty, and there is no one to take care of the parents?
In another example, I was told (first hand) that a man had passed away, and no one knew about him for some time as none of his kids would visit him!
So my advice…stay away from the Haram, put your faith and trust in Allah, do what you should be doing, and you will experience success…may Allah bless us all! Ameen
