Question:
Are we allowed to wear clothes which have feathers of birds of prey?
Answer:
I think this is a question that simply stretches the area of logic and also imagination…unless I’ve missed something…is there any style today that incorporates actual parts from ‘birds of prey’ in their clothing lines? I can be quite creative in dreaming different scenarios…but this one, simply NO!
Its similar to a question that I recall a while back, the questioner asked…: ‘If I go to the moon, which way would I pray?’ You know what…when you get there call up a scholar and ask him!
For the sake of answering this question, let’s look at what we are dealing with…
a. Birds of prey, are usually in the ruling of ‘jal’laalah’ since it eats carrion and other road kill; thus it is not allowed for a Muslim to use that.
b. The Prophet, may Allah praise him, forbade that one sit on the skin of carnivorous animals. A parallel can be drawn between birds of prey and carnivorous animals, as both have been prohibited for consumption by the Prophet, may Allah praise him.
c. I don’t think it is legal (from a political standpoint) for one to use feathers of birds of prey to begin with! In the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 protects migratory birds between the United States and Great Britain. The statute makes it unlawful without a waiver to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill or sell birds listed therein…over 800 species are currently on the list!So in the unlikely scenario when you come across a clothing/craft item that is to be worn that has feathers from a bird of prey, simply…don’t wear it!
