All the praises is for Allah the Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon His Chosen Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions all of them.

Question :

If the Prophet, may Allah praise him, allowed us to eat ‘Hyena’, then why did Imam Abu Hanifa say: ‘NO’ to Hyena?

Answer:

Technically speaking, there could be a number of reasons why the Imam didn’t allow one to consume Hyena…one of the reasons, which could be quite simple and straightforward is that the Imam didn’t receive the hadeeth that legalizes it.
The second reason, is that if the Imam had received the narration, he may have perceived it as a weak one, and thus did not take by it. Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, clarifies these reasons in his amazing work: “Raf’ al-Malam”.

Now looking at the question in a different light…I mentioned in the course: “You are not required to eat/try everything that is Halal!” The Prophet, may Allah praise him, did not eat Desert Lizard meat…but some of his companions did!

On a side note…I was asked a personal question… ‘Have you eaten hyena?’ Well, honestly…not yet, haven’t had the chance, as it is hard to come by in general.
