All the praises is for Allah the Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon His Chosen Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions all of them.

Spread of Fitnah #2: Brothers and sisters, we are not apologists, we don’t try to find ‘excuses’ or simply dismiss things like this. Let me say this, these words of the Prophet, may Allah praise him, indicate to us just how great the issue of mercy is in Islam. Had he not said this, we wouldn’t have been able to measure the mercy of the Prophet, may Allah praise him.
When the Quraish were gathered and wanted to physically harm or even kill the Prophet, may Allah praise him, all he had to do was make one single Dua, and that would have been the end of all Makkah’s polytheists. But he didn’t do that…
Once again, when he was barred from entering in Makkah, Angel Jibreel came to him, with the angel of the mountains…and he was told: “Just give the word, and this Angel will crush all of those in Makkah!” Still, the Prophet, may Allah praise him, refrained and he said: “It may be that Allah will send forth from their progeny people who say La e’laha il’la Allah Muhammad Rasool Allah.” Such was the mercy of the Prophet, may Allah praise him.
Yet again, when he came back with an army that was far superior to the Makkan army during the Conquest of Makkah and it was thought, that the people of Makkah would be put to the sword…he simply told the people: “Go you are free…!” Allah Akbar!!
Such was the mercy of our Prophet…he guided us through his actions and as Allah, the Exalted, says: “We have only sent you as as mercy to mankind.”
This is our Deen…this is the mercy we have been instructed to live by…this is what we are to uphold!

Now going back to the narration…we must realize the following:
a. It was said during the Makkan period…thus it is closer to being an abrogated text; it is abrogated through the actions of the Prophet, may Allah praise him, and the words of Allah, wherein Allah describes the Prophet as a mercy to mankind.

b. The narration is specific, as is in the narration of Ahmed, those who are addressed by it were the heads of Quraish: Abu Jahl, Ubai bin Khalaf, Uqbah bin Abi Muait among seven who were considered the heads of Quraish.

c. The Prophet dealt with heads of Kufr who were captured not in battle (Thumaamah bin O’thal, and Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl) in such an amazing way…the Prophet, may Allah praise him, dealt with them in a way of mercy…and they both became Muslim on account of what they had witnessed.

d. Even during the capture of Makkah, when one of the generals from the Ansar stated that the People of Makkah would pay for their crimes, he was taken away from his post to indicate to the Companions at large that this was not the case. Look at Abu Sufyan, the one time enemy of Islam who had afterwards become among the strongest of believers…Allah Akbar!

That aside…brothers and sisters there is one last thing that I must mention here…there is a narration that states that the Prophet, may Allah praise him, sanctioned that non-Muslim combatants be put to the sword as sheep are slaughtered…but this is false…it has not been recorded authentically that the Prophet, may Allah praise him, sanctioned this! Sh. At-Turaifi, may Allah preserve him, said: “As for the story that the Prophet enjoined decapitation and that Ibn Masood, may Allah be pleased with him, brought the decapitated head of one of the Mushriks to him, this is not authentic.”

So at the end of this…brothers and sisters…know that Islam in no way legalizes blood-shedding as is witnessed today in the Middle East…we seek refuge with Allah from all the Fitnah…Ameen!
