Q&A What is the Ruling of Wearing High-Heels

All the praises is for Allah the Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon His Chosen Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions all of them.

Question:

What is the ruling of wearing High-Heels?

Answer:

If we revisit the guideline given to us by our beloved Prophet, may Allah praise him: “لا ضرر ولا ضرار” i.e. do not harm yourself or allow the harm to extend to others.
…the question we should ask is what harm can result from ‘high-heels’! Before looking at the medical aspect of chronic ‘high-heelers’, I’ve seen countless women taking uncomfortable spills, injuring themselves and those around them.
From a medical point of view, it exerts a lot of pressure on the foot in an unnatural way. It lead to a great deal of harm on the muscle and bone structure. Don’t believe me…look at the images attached with this post!
From a different angle…I see ‘oppression’ in the high-heels phenomena…its as though certain elements in society demand that women conform to that ‘appealing image’. Even though, in the West, a lot is being done to reverse the the image of women as a sex symbol in the media, it still persists! Look at how deodorants are marketed! There is always a sex appeal…it just goes to show how shallow the marketing machine today views the average individual in society!
My take? Its the oppressive ‘JAHILI’ mentality that is making a comeback.
Scholars have spoken about it and mentioned in general that it is prohibited due to health issues and that it makes women appear as a sex symbol.
I must add though, if the high-heels aren’t all that ‘high’, and do not harm a women’s posture or subjugate her to appear as a sex symbol, then it is not prohibited.

A final word, my plea to a sister who feels obliged to becoming a chronic ‘high-heeler’ DON’T!
