Taking Knowledge from Only Books, Resemble the Khawarij, By Shaykh Salih al Fawzan

All the Praise is due to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Him alone without associating partners in worship with him, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave and Messengers. Peace and Blessing be upon His Messengers Mustafa the Seal of the Prophets, and his family his companions , those who follow him and is guide and in harmony with his Sunnah.

To what proceeds: Allah the Most High says:

إنمّا يَخشىَ اللهَ مِن عِبَادِهِ العُلَماءُ
سورة فاطر: 28
“It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah. “

And the saying of the Messenger of Allah sallahu wa alayhe wa sallam:

من يُرِدْ اللهُ بِهِ خَيرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ في الدَّين

“ Whoever Allah wants good for He give him the understanding of the Deen [ religion of Islam]”
Narrated by Mu’awiyyah and collected by Muslim.

Allah states in His Noble Book:

“It is not (possible) for any human being to whom Allah has given the Book and Al-Hukma (the knowledge and understanding of the laws of religion, etc.) and Prophet-hood to say to the people: “Be my worshipers rather than Allah’s.” On the contrary (he would say): “Be you Rabbaniyun (learned men of religion who practice what they know and also preach others), because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it.”

This is an excerpt from a lecture of Shaykh Salih bin Fawzan bin Abdillah al Fawzan حفظه الله  title: “ Important Directions for the Nation’s Youths.”

  • Concerning you O’ Youths for it’s upon you to be concern with your self first:

Upon you is seeking beneficial knowledge.  They are directed (the  youths) to seek beneficial knowledge under the support of the scholars, whether in the schools, the  institutes, and the faculties, or in the masjids.  They partake in the lessons of the scholars, that are known for knowledge and Istiqamah (upright and stead fast with it). Fear Allah Aza wa Jala and be those who are away from thinking that is abnormal, and strange statements.

  • You have the straight directed Ulimaah (scholars) correct course;

So the youths obtain from them Aqeedah, and Knowledge and Manners and the ways and the correct methodology. Which you work with it, with your self and with other than you.  Indeed the Ulimaa are the inheritors of the Prophets, so just as they the Sahabah’s youths ( Sahabah are the companions of Allah’s Messenger sallahu wa alayhi wa salam)  learnt under Allah’s Messenger sallahu wa alyhi wa salam and they learnt under the Ulimaa of the Sahabah. So you’re learning under the inheritors of  the Messenger sallahu wa alayhi wa salam. They are the Ulimaa holding the knowledge with its people (scholars of Islam) whether in schools or present in seminars, or lectures and sermons or in the reading of beneficial books (with the Ulimaa).

  • There are now two deviant paths in learning:

1. Learning from books without the Ulimaa, so this is the deviate path and many who are astray because of this. Because he does not understand what’s in the books or understand what the books intends. Because books do not explain it self for him (the reader) or makes it clear or perhaps the author is deviant in his understanding or in his knowledge, so his books are with mistakes in knowledge, so he reads it, this youth who is ignorant. So he embrace it, so these books do not depend on it.  Even if its  the correct books (etc. authentic books and authors), so indeed you do not understand the books according to what is required. And what astray the Khawarij (first sect in Islam, who made the blood of the Muslim halaal, and killed many of the Sahabah)  with their intellect along with their devotion and they where astray except the reason that they isolated (themselves) and they depended upon their  understanding, and they depend on the likeness of them, so they obtain (their understanding) with one another. So they became harmful upon each other, and upon the Ummah (Islamic Nation) , and this is the result of isolation from the Ulimaa.

– You are instructed to be occupied with seeking beneficial knowledge under the support of the Ulimaa and to stay away from plunging into things (starting trouble), speaking about people, and backbiting and gossiping, and criticizing and slander. Indeed this is an evil outspread, divided the Ummah’s youths and made them groups and parties because what is present in people ( from criticizing, backbiting, gossip and calumniation, due to their incorrect understandings) .

2. So those whom there is no concern (about seeking knowledge correctly), except for so and so said like this and so and so said like that, and what’s up with you with so and so (or worry about your self and not so and so). You seek knowledge until you know the truth. Regarding, that you deem the people in error before you learn, and you say so and so said like this and so and so said like that, and they warn about such person (so and so).

This is not a sound minhaj (methodology) Allah the Majestic  and the Most High said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

“O you who believe! If a Fasiq (liar – evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done.”

Hurjaat verse: 6

How do you investigate and be sure except with learning beneficial knowledge under the support of the people of knowledge (Ulimaa) known for their knowledge.

  • Beware O’ Youths from the Astray Call

Indeed the Astray’s Call they are much today. Very the Messenger sallahu wa alayhi wa salam warn from them he said: ” Indeed what I fear upon my nation is the ashtray nation” collected by Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah and Musnad of Imam Ahmed. Those who will steer them astray and he sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said:

” The most fearful of what I fear the most on my nation all the Munafiq (hypocrites) who process knowledge of the tongue “, narrated by  Ahmed in his Musnad regarding the Hadeeth of Umar bin Al Khaatab radi allahu anhu.

Which means:  he who is process proper speech and elegance and is able to promote doubtfulness,  falsifies the realities of things. He meets the people with it, so the ignorantness deems it as knowledge and that are proofs, and it is the mirage of the deceitful.

Upon you is the direction of seeking knowledge and you take it from its people (ahul ilm ) that are known for it and you’re not restricted to reading books or listening to audios indeed some of the people they take this path for learning. And one of them reads in the books and listens to audios and he says I took (this knowledge) from ( Shaykh) so and so from his book or from his audios.

This is a great error, the knowledge is grasped from the scholars indeed these books are an aid and a means to serve with an Alim (scholar) and is question about it and it is explained and it is made clear (books and lectures of audios of the scholars and people) and the scholar explain the truth and the mistakes in it (books and lectures of audios of scholars and people).

So you for example if you wanted to learn medicine do you read the books of medicine (only) then you put it to practice, then perform treating the people based on your reading about medicine. Possibility you will kill many people because this path you are not a doctor and indeed you are not the one who practice medicine. And this is threatening for who is under medical treatment. And this is not a good practice of medicine. Now this is in the field of medicine so how is it so in the Deen (of Islam , religion of Islam) and the knowledge (of the religion of Islam) and you do not learn from the correct path and verily you learnt from the path of audio and listening to it or books and reading it or what was said to you.

This is not the path of knowledge, indeed we say you benefit from the books and you benefit from the audio with sitting with the people of knowledge, and this is the best form for you, from what you read and what you listen to, that you ask regarding it to the teacher ( people of knowledge). Allah the Most High said: (فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ) ”Ask the people of remembrance (knowledge) if you do not know” Surah Nahil 34 .

And  the People of Remembrance: they are the people of knowledge ( the scholars of Islam) so do not depend on your own understanding or an understanding other than you from who is like you or below you rather upon you is to ask ahul ilm ( the people of knowledge) and Allah does not say: ask some from among you, rather He said: (فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ) ”Ask the people of remembrance (knowledge) if you do not know” specifically.

This is my advice for all the youths they are directed to seeking knowledge that is beneficial, and they take that knowledge from the authentic scholars, with their knowledge and they fear Allah Exalted and the Most High.

Some of the Salaf said: ” إن هذا العلم دين فانظروا عمن تأخذون دينَكم “ ” Indeed this knowledge is Deen so look towards who you take your Deen from”.

So do you take your Deen from the Jahil (ignorant) or the ashtray.. this is not correct or to take your Deen from a book (only) all of this is not correct do not take your Deen (from these paths) except an Alim (scholars) who fears Allah.

Allah the Most High said: إنما يخشَى اللهَ من عِبادِهِ العلماؤأ ” Indeed those who Fear Allah the most from His slaves are the Ulimaaa (scholars); surah Fatr 28, so take from the scholars those who Fear Allah there are two conditions: he is an Alim (scholar) and that he Fears Allah.

So if it be that the Alim (scholar) do not fear Allah you do not take from him, and if it be he fears Allah but is not an Alim you do not take from him.

Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said:

“There was a man from among a nation before you who killed ninety-nine people and then made an inquiry about the most learned person on the earth. He was directed to a monk. He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the negative and the man killed him also completing one hundred. He then asked about the most learned man in the earth. He was directed to a scholar. He told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the affirmative and asked, `Who stands between you and repentance? Go to such and such land; there (you will find) people devoted to prayer and worship of Allah, join them in worship, and do not come back to your land because it is an evil place.’ So he went away and hardly had he covered half the distance when death overtook him; and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of torment. The angels of mercy pleaded, ‘This man has come with a repenting heart to Allah,’ and the angels of punishment argued, ‘He never did a virtuous deed in his life.’ Then there appeared another angel in the form of a human being and the contending angels agreed to make him arbiter between them. He said, `Measure the distance between the two lands. He will be considered belonging to the land to which he is nearer.’ They measured and found him closer to the land (land of piety) where he intended to go, and so the angels of mercy collected his soul”.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
In another version: “He was found to be nearer to the locality of the pious by a cubit and was thus included among them”.

Another version says: “Allah commanded (the land which he wanted to leave) to move away and commanded the other land (his destination) to draw nearer and then He said: ‘Now measure the distance between them.’ It was found that he was nearer to his goal by a hand’s span and was thus forgiven”.

It is also narrated that he drew closer by a slight movement on his chest.

All of this is good, and he obtains it because of asking an Alim, concerning the ignorant worshiper, so you know what happens (due to his wrong answer, not having knowledge).

This is the difference between the answer of the ignorant and the answer of an  Alim.  So with this he sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said:

” The superiority of the Alim over the worshipper is like the superiority of the moon over the remaining of the stars”, narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi from the Hadeeth Abu Dardaar radi allahu anhu.

So what is the difference between the moon and the stars? The moon’s light shines on the world, for the people. Concerning the star for indeed its light is for its self (means the light is dull). And the worshiper his worship is restricted to him and the people do not benefit from his worship.

Concerning the Alim, so his benefits reach out like the light of the moon, it spreads out to the people.

So do not be away from the Ulimaa rather it’s upon you to accept them and take from them and to ask them concerning what continues to be present in you.  Do not depend upon your own understanding, or the understanding of the Jahil (ignorant) or the Mutalimoon (those who take their knowledge from books or audio and not from the scholars) who do not depend on the people of knowledge.  Or they learn from themselves (like the Khawarij) or those of the likeness of them.

Those who take from them, that their path is the wrong path. Because they took knowledge from other than the correct way.

And Allah Jala wa Ala said:

وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَن تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَىٰ ۗ وَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا ۚ

“It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness) that you enter the houses from the back but Al-Birr (is the quality of the one) who fears Allah. So enter houses through their proper ” ٍSurah al Baqra 189

So knowledge comes from its doors (foundation, learning basics first) and it does not come from the top of it ( high advanced knowledge).  Rather process step by step, from the easy principles to the hard principles.

Concerning those who take knowledge all in one shot, and take from the top of it (high advanced knowledge). Those individuals obtain nothing except ignorance and misled (misguided).

That would be the ignorant of them, and the misled of them, knowledge is restricted ( to them because they do not grasp it from its correct path). But the problem be that they target others than them, and they cause fitnah and they speak about Allah and His Messenger without knowledge. Information from their wrong understanding.

This path is evil and it is the path of the Mutalimoon which is much now. Many of the youth detach themselves from the Ulimaaa and taking knowledge from them.

You see what happen from this mighty fitnah (trials), where so he calls to Jihad ( fighting for Islam), and he calls to knowledge. so it ends up becoming destructive (because of not having proper knowledge of it)  and fearful and cause fighting (and killings) in countries.   This is the results of the isolation from the Ulimaa (scholars).
