All praise is to Allah and peace and blessing be upon His Messenger Muhammad sallahu wa alahi wa salam.

In our times in the West there and those who look to promote their group, clique over other groups and cliques. And if you are not with them or agree with them. They look to destroy each other call and group.  Like that which takes place between many of salafi today like Salafitalk v.s Uloom English and other than them. In these matters sometimes we forget what Allah and His Messenger sallahu wa alyhi wa salam said and the advice of the scholars past and present. Here is a reminder from our Shaykh, Shaykh Dr. Salih bin Fawzan in a question and answer.

Question: Just as you all know it has become widespread in our recent time the grouping/labeling between the Students of Knowledge into sects and groups. What is your advice about this?

Answer: It is not permissible to make sects and partisanship [تحزب]. The Muslims are one Jam’ah [group] all the praise to Allah.

 إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَأَنَا رَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُونِ
(  سورة الأنبياء  , Al-Anbiya, Chapter #21, Verse #92)

Truly! This, your Ummah [Shari’ah or religion (Islamic Monotheism)] is one religion, and I am your Lord, therefore worship Me (Alone).

وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا

(  سورة آل عمران  , Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #103)

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Qur’an), and be not divided among yourselves ,

وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ ۚ وَأُولَـٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
(  سورة آل عمران  , Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #105)

And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment

وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَا تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ ۖ وَاصْبِرُوا
(  سورة الأنفال  , Al-Anfal, Chapter #8, Verse #46)

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength departs, and be patient.

And if you have differing then you  refer to the Book [of Allah] and the Sunnah [ of the Messenger sallahu wa alyhi wa salam]

فَإِن تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِن كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۚذَ‌ٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلًا
(  سورة النساء  , An-Nisa, Chapter #4, Verse #59)

 (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.

And we do not stay on differing and splitting off and partisanship of all type, this is all prohibited regarding the Deen. And this is the cause of the contrary impact. It is a must to have unity between the Muslims and mutual understanding and to traverse upon one way until it becomes for the Ummah inspiration and cooperation in what is between us. And be widespread between them love [love for each other]. Because  splitting  [  groups, sects, partisanship ] conflicts happen rather  fighting happens :

 وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ مَا اقْتَتَلَ الَّذِينَ مِن بَعْدِهِم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ وَلَـٰكِنِ اخْتَلَفُوا

(  سورة البقرة  , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #253)

If Allah had willed, succeeding generations would not have fought against each other, after clear Verses of Allah had come to them, but they differed –

Differing sometimes leads to carrying weapons between the Muslims. So it is not permissible differing .

Concerning differing in principles in fiqhiya Jurisprudent this is present no more than  Ijtihaad [ Ijtihaad الاجتهاد an independent judgment in legal questions based on interpretation and application in the jurisprudence of the scholars past and present].

Concerning differing between the people grouping into groups [ sects, cliques, partisanship etc]  this is not permissible

من الشيخ صالح بن فوزان بن عبد الله الفوزان حفظه الله
السؤال: 
كما تعلمون انتشر في الآونة الأخيرة التصنيف بين طلاب العلم إلى فرق وجماعات فما نصيحتكم؟
الجواب: لا يجوز التفرق والتحزب، المسلمون جماعة واحدة ولله الحمد (إِنَّ هَذِهِ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَأَنَا رَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُونِ)، (وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً وَلا تَفَرَّقُوا)، (وَلا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمْ الْبَيِّنَاتُ وَأُوْلَئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ)، (وَلا تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ وَاصْبِرُوا)، وإذا حصل اختلاف يرد إلى الكتاب والسنة (فَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِنْ كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلاً)، ولا نبقى على الاختلاف والانقسامات والتحزبات هذا ينهى عنه الدين وهذا يسبب آثار عكسية لازم من الاتحاد بين المسلمين والتفاهم والسير على طريق واحد حتى يكون للأمة هيبة ويكون لها تعاون فيما بينها وتنتشر بينهم المحبة لأن التفرق يحدث النزاع بل ربما يحدث القتال (وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ مَا اقْتَتَلَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمْ الْبَيِّنَاتُ وَلَكِنْ اخْتَلَفُوا)، الاختلاف أحيانا يؤدي إلى حمل السلاح بين المسلمين، فلا يجوز الاختلاف، أما الخلاف في المسائل الفقهية هذا وارد حسب الاجتهاد، أما الاختلاف بين الناس والتفرق إلى جماعات فهذا لا يجوز. نعم.
