What follows after: This in response to sister from her email ‘Ayah Mahfouz ‘ from Niqaabes page [ facebook].
From Ayah Mahfouz Salaam,RE: a comment you left on the niqab FB group.You said منتقةwhich you transliterated as muntaqibah, means a woman who wears niqab. This is not correct. The word you pasted does not mean such, as it will sound like “mentaqa” and definitely not like “muntaqibah” which does not mean this either. The word you are looking for is “muniqaba.” Mu=one who does something. Hence muniqaba=one who wears niqab and muhajiba=one who wears hijab. Good luck with your future Arabic lessons, inshaallah. In the meantime, please don’t try to teach others the language until you become fluent, as this is how wrong information is started”
My response;
Not true, there are many words for the women who wear niqab, Transliterated has no meaning in English, what is important what was written in Arabic. Common mistakes made in Arabic, the veil in Arabic is نِقَابٌ niqab, the common mistake is the one who wear Niqaab people call her Niqabe this is wrong for the word نِقابيّ means Union, or Union member or worker. The correct word for a woman who wear niqab is مُنتَقِبة Muntaqibah, also: منقبة او منتقبة و الصحيح منتقبة

As any Arabic speaker, or teacher of Arabic will tell you, transliterated words do indeed have meaning. Transliteration is simply romanising Arabic alphabet. But since you think you are the native speaker, and not me (Mr. Amreeki), what exactly is منتقة which is the word you told the women on the group? I am well aware of what neqabee means in Arabic, but I also think you were well aware of what the group was about and showed up to “correct” them for no good reason. In any case, muntaqiba is an outlandishly archaic term only used by Wahhabis and taught to foreigners who will never use the language in real life.Allahm3ak

You know very well what I mean, and be careful with your accusations against a Muslim. There is a difference between those who follow the misguided ibn Abd-al-Wahhab (aka, “salafis” may Allah guide them) and one of the names of our Creator. Did they not explain this to you when you converted and they started teaching you bad Arabic?
She blocked me and did not wait for my response so Ayah Mahfouz here is my response May we all benefit from it.
You know since we are talking in English, when you assume things about a person you become to be the first three letters an ‘ ass ‘. It seems that your contact with me, was not to give advice rather you have some problems with a group of people, in the religion aspect and maybe some culture misunderstanding. Let me give you a little history lessons about Arabs, Arabic language and grammar scholars of Arabic. A lot of people think the whole middle east is so call Arab by blood which is not correct many of these countries like Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Morocco Jordan, Kuwait , Sudan and Lebanon etc are consider to be التعريب Arabization of the Arab because of Islam, Alhamdulillah, and the spread of Islam. And the teaching of Islam was spread by teaching the people who they rule over, Arabic so they can understand Islam. From this you see many scholars of Arabic language who were from the non Arabs like the likeness of Imam Dawud al Aljorumiya who has a famous book on Arabic grammar who he was from Morocco and was Berber, his family name is Berber which mean Poor. He was also from the master of Arabic who Allah bless him, and to this day his book is taught all around the world. Next is Imam Sibawayh rahimallah who a famous scholar of Arabic language who was Persian, who wrote the first known book on Arabic grammar which is taught in the middle east today. Next is the author of the famous scholar of Arabic who was from Sudan and he wrote the famous series call Lisanu al Arab who was from the non Arabic , Berber, his name Imam Jamalu Deen Muhammad Afreeke [Berber]. To end this, you and neither do I own Islam, own Arabic, If you study any of those books I mention above you would even know that in Arabic there are different opinion and even Mathabs ( Kufeeyeen and Basreen ) in Arabic which are two. I will end with this note Allah state in Quran: ” O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun (pious – see V.2:2). Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

Muntaqibah or Niqaabee?
As Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahii wa Barakaatuhu.
May Allah the Possessor of Mercy, which is in abdundance and the Bestower of this Mercy upon whomever He wills in this life and as well as in the next. Aameen. From Abee Ruqayyatah Timeem ibn Aaws Ad-Daaree, may Allah be pleased with him, that An-Nabiyee, sallallahu alayhi wa sallama said: “Ad-Deenu An-Naseehah (the Religion is of sincere advisement)”, we said: To whom?”To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, and to the leaders of Al-Muslimeen and to their common folk”. (Muslim – 55). After hearing this word Niqaabiee for a while now as a term describing a woman who wears the Niqaab, I decided to see if this is the correct word to use to describe these sisters who struggle in this path, Baaraka Allahu feekunn. First off, this word Niqaabee isnt found in such books as Al-Mu’jamu Al-Waseetu (the Intermediary Dictionary), nor is it in Al-Mu’jamu Al-Wajeezu (the Concise Dictionary). As for The Hans Wher Dictionary, its states: niqaabi: cooperative; syndicalistic; syndicalist; trade-unionist. And in the Al-Mawrid (the Resource), it states: niqaabi: union, syndicalist. In Webster’s New World Dictionary it states: syndicalism: a theory of trade unionism in which all means of production and distribution would be brought under control of federations of labor unions by the use of general strikes, etc. – syndicalist. The word “naqaba” means: to bore, pierce, perforate, breach, make a hole or breach; punch or drill a hole (through), as well as other similar meanings, Allah knows best. I also called our Shaykh Aboo Abdul-A’laa Khaalid ibn Uthmaan, may Allah preserve him, and asked him about this word “Niqaabee” and its meaning. He, the Shaykh told me, that a niqaabee is someone who works with his hands, fixing and fashioning steel, metal, wood or anything similar. Who he works in factories/warehouses or similar to them. he said, as for naming a woman who wears a niqaab, she is to be called Muntaqibah. He said that this is the correct word that is used to name her as, not niqaabee. I also talked to one of my teachers, he also said as Shaykh Khaalid said, that muntaqibah is the term used to describe a woman who wears the niqaab and not niqaabee. He said that this word niqaabee is a word from Al-Aamiyyah (slang) for a woman who wears a niqaab, as is munaqqabah. He said, a niqaabee is a worker/a laborer. This is just sincere advice from a brother who needs advice and correction, more than he is to be giving advice or correction. May Allah forgive me, you and all of the Muslims for our shortcomings. Also may He continue to guide all of the Muntaqibaat in their striving. Aameen.
