The Call to Tawheed and the Arrows of the Biases

By Shaykh Dr Salih bin Fawzan bin Abdillah Al Fawzan

The means to get near to Allah with two things:

  1.   With that He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.

 أَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Thou art the most Merciful of the merciful.

Surah Anbiyaa 83]

  1. With his situation which reach you to that point. [Towards the hardship which afflicts you].

 وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ

And Ayub, when he cried to his Lord, (saying): Harm has afflicted me.” Surah Anbiyaa 83]

That is from at-tawasil al-masroo’a: The one who supplicate seek from a pious who is present.  That you seek from the pious slave who is alive and present.  That he calls for you or that he calls to Allah for the Muslims.  This is from at-tawasil al-masroo’a.

The proof of that, the companions may Allah be pleased with them, they were in drought and that the rain was held back. They sought from the prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam to ask for them and that he call to Allah for them, that it rain for them. Hadeeth in Bukharee number 1017 narrated by Anaas ibn Malik radi allahu anhu.

And when the prophet sallahu alyhi wa sallam past away and they suffer from drought they went to al-Abaas bin Abdil Mutalib the uncle of the prophet sallahu alyhi wa salam and Umar radi allahu anhu  said to him “ O Allah just as we draw near to you with your prophet , for him to call to you for rain for us, and indeed we draw near to you Allah with the uncle of your prophet for him to pray for rain for us, and he stood al-Abaas and he called to Allah and they were assure. Thereafter rain was sent down upon them. Hadeeth al-Bukharee number 1010 from ibn Anas.

This is Tawasil with the supplication of the Pious and it is to be the pious slave alive, present and with you supplicating for you, this is Tawasil that is lawful. No problem with this and these are the types of Tawasil that are lawful.

2. Regard to Tawasil that is prohibited: it is to make an intermediary between the one who supplicate and between Allah as a set requirement. This is forbidden this is section into two sections.

First sectionIf you get near to this mediator [intercessor with Allah] by slaughtering to it, and making vows to it, for this is Major Shirk, which put one out side the religion of Islam.  Then there are those who they slaughter to the graves and they vow to the graves and they say these are our intercessors with Allah like the earlier of the Musrikoon [Polytheists].

Second section:  That you do not draw near to the mediator [intercessor with Allah] as an act of worship. Merely you call to Allah and you claim that this mediator will intercede for you with Allah, for this is an innovation and the means to shirk and there no break away from this factor.

So Tawasil, not all of it is shirk and not all of it is permitted, there is no escape from this detail because many of those who are biases [against the call and caller of Tawheed] they mix this affair [with falsehood]. They say you are harsh and you are Khawaarij, and you are harsh upon the people and they say this is from tawasil and Allah order with it, with the saying:

وَابْتَغُوا إِلَيْهِ الْوَسِيلَةَ

“ .. And seek means of nearness to Him”

Maidah verse 35

It is obliged to know this and that the Scholars explain and make it clear to the people, this affair and that they abandon these biases people that they mix the truth with falsehood to the people.

Ending, we ask Allah that He shows the reality of the Truth, and He provide us with following it and He shows us the false of falsehood and He proves us with abandoning it.

And Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family, and companions.
